L. E. Muesch, a real life adventurer has won several literary awards including, winner in the Action Adventure category of the 2009 National Indie Excellence Awards, and winner in the Creative non-fiction category of the 2008 national USA Book News Awards. A true story of survival
L.E.M remembers, Helen and I were walking the beach that fateful day when we spotted a white foam line on the horizon. Realizing we couldn't outrun the wave, we stood there on the beach with our arms wrapped around each another staring at the growing, monstrous wave. I looked at it in disbelief, thinking to myself, this can't be happening. It's the day after Christmas, and this is a world-class resort. This can't be real ----it's just not happening here.
The wave was growing higher and higher as it raced toward us. I said to myself over and over, Concentrate! Just concentrate on your fingers locked into one another, bear-hugging Helen. No matter what else happens, just concentrate on not letting go. I kept thinking how the force of the water would want to pry my fingers apart, but if I concentrated hard enough and put everything else out of my mind, I could do it. As the wave rose up above us, I foolishly dug my toes and feet into the sand and leaned my body into the wave in a fruitless attempt to withstand the force of the wave.

The Witch of White Pine - a Novella
